find the best energy plan

Did you know that you might be able to save money by changing your home energy plan? Even if you can’t switch to a new company to save money, most energy companies offer customers a variety of pricing plans and the default plan may not always be the most economical plan for you. Follow the below steps and find out what energy plan is the best fit for you!

Call your energy company
The first step to finding the best energy plan is to call your energy company. In my experience, utility companies will help you decide which plan is the best for you. If your utility company can’t recommend a specific plan, ask the customer service representative to send you information about the various plans and pricing policies offered to customers. Alternately, check the company’s website for pricing and plan information.

Evaluate your energy use
Do you use most of your energy in the evening hours? Do you work from home and run multiple electronic devices as well as the air conditioner or heater during the day? Every family uses energy differently and, so, it is imperative that you understand how and when you use energy.

Compare plans
Once you’ve received information about the plans your energy company offers, compare the individual plans with your energy usage patterns. For example, a time of use plan that offers discounts for energy used between 4 pm and 7 pm, but charges a premium for usage between 8 am and 4 pm might not be a good choice for those that work from home.

Change plans and track your savings
After you change energy plans, track your savings. If you aren’t saving as much as you expected, or worse you’re paying more, then you probably overlooked something important. Call your energy company and enlist the company’s help in determining why your savings weren’t what you expected.

Have you changed energy plan to save money? What other insights can you offer from your experience?
