eco-friendly hiking tips

Spring has arrived and one good way to celebrate the beautiful outdoors is to go on a hike with your family. So go ahead and pack a few essentials − you may want to use this checklist − and don't forget your trail mix! Select a hiking trail that accommodates the various ages of your hikers and set off.

Here are a few eco-friendly guidelines for your hiking expedition:

•    Pack out what you pack in. This is a basic tip, but it’s important and should not be overlooked! If you carry items in, be sure to bring those items back out. That means no trash left behind!

•    Take photos not souvenirs. So you spotted a beautiful Lady Slipper flower? Take a photo of the flower, but leave it behind so that it is able to reproduce and make more beauties for others to enjoy.

•    Stay on the trail. Not only do you not want to get lost, but staying on the trail also helps protect the nature off the path. You don't want to pack the soil with your footsteps or crush some spectacular, one-of-a-kind fungi.

•    Don't feed the wildlife. I know it is tempting to feed the squirrels or other critters, but you really aren't doing them a favor. Feeding the wildlife causes them to become more vulnerable and dependent on people.

I hope you enjoy many hikes with your family and that you find these eco-friendly hiking tips to be a good reminder of how to show our respect for the Earth and its habitats.
