Three Dorm-Friendly Breakfast Ideas

Sep 14, 2015

My nephew recently moved into his freshman dormitory and while it is in a nice, new building, I was surprised by the lack of kitchen facilities. The dorm that I lived in had a small kitchen including an oven, stove, built-in refrigerator and small sink. Evidently kitchenette units aren’t as common as I thought. His new home inspired me to think about a few dorm-friendly breakfast ideas that don’t require kitchen facilities.

Three Dorm-Friendly Breakfast Ideas

The beauty of homemade smoothies is that the ingredients and equipment take up very little space and you can easily mix it up. A small, single-serve blender and a mini-refrigerator to hold your favorite fruits and vegetables are all you need. When you’re done making your smoothie, clean your blender in your sink with a bottle of dish soap and let it air dry.

For smoothie inspiration, check out one of these recipes:

Oatmeal is a great way to start your day. If you have a microwave in your room, you can purchase the pre-packaged individual sized oatmeal containers and you’re set. The downside is that these single-serving bowls are wasteful. Instead of taking the easy way out, set aside some time at the beginning of the week to make your own DIY oatmeal packet.

Simply put a pre-measured amount of quick cook oatmeal into a Ziploc® Brand Sandwich Bag, add your own flavors and store in a cool, dry place. When you’re ready to use your DIY oatmeal packet, pour the contents of your bag into a bowl, add the required amount of water and pop it in the microwave for 1 to 1.5 minutes. When you’re done, don’t forget to hand wash your bowl and spoon.

Yogurt parfaits
Yogurt parfaits are quick and easy to make, simply alternate layers of your favorite yogurt, fruit and granola. Put parfaits in your mini refrigerator and you’re all set.

What is your favorite dorm-friendly breakfast recipe?
