10 Creative Ways to Reuse Plastics

Recycling is such a wonderful way to go green. If you don't recycle yet, make it your New Year's resolution because it can make such a huge impact. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, in 2013, Americans had a 34.3 percent recycling rate. That shows while many people have gotten on board, we still have room for improvement.

Did you know that Ziploc® Brand Bags are recyclable? Check your local waste authority for more details.

Recycling is a way to reuse our plastics, but upcycling by reusing plastics is a fun way to make eco-friendly choices. Here are 10 creative uses for plastics.0

1.  Clean plastic yogurt cups can be used for seedlings.

If you want to be ready to plant your garden in April, it is a great idea to start your seedlings indoors in January, February or March. Plastic yogurt cups can be perfect for this. Poking a few holes in the bottom before you plant can help prevent water from becoming trapped inside the pot.

2.  Plastic soda bottles can be turned into hanging planters.

With a few modifications and some string, a plastic soda bottle can easily be turned into a hanging planter for herbs or flowers. See a tutorial here.

3.  Plastic bags can be reused as doggy poop bags.

You can reuse plastic grocery bags when cleaning up after your dog instead of buying rolls at the store.

4.  Plastic bags can be reused as dog bed cushion filler.

If the foam or stuffing from an old outdoor pillow needs to be replaced, you can fill it with plastic bags and sew it back up to make a cushy new pet pillow.

5.  Plastic bottles can be turned into scoops.

Leave the lid on and cut off the bottom of a plastic bottle to create a scoop. This scoop can be used in your pet food canister or for other bulk supplies.

6.  Plastic lids can be reused as toys, craft supplies, and teaching tools.

There are so many ways to reuse plastic bottle lids in educational fun ways for children. Get 10 ideas here.

7.  Plastics can used as toys.

From using yogurt cups as building blocks, to using plastic bottles to build skyscrapers, there are lots of ways to reuse old plastic containers as toys once they have been cleaned out.

8.  Plastics also make great raw materials for crafts.

Whether you are turning old plastic milk jugs into animals (like this milk jug lion), or turning old plastic water bottles into discovery bottles, there are so many ways to let a child use their imagination and create with plastics.

9.  The bottoms of plastic soda bottles can become art.

You can use the bottoms of plastic soda bottles, which have a flower shape, as a stamp for kid’s art projects.

10. Plastic bags can also make great drop cloths.

If you are starting a painting project with your child, a few plastic bags cut open and spread wide can protect your work area.

What are some of the creative ways that you reuse plastics?
