Easy Green Ways to Save Money This Year

Jan 14, 2016

When the New Year rolls around, many people choose to make a resolution. Some want to lose weight, while others simply want to exercise more often. A significant number of people resolve to save more money, and others choose to live a greener life. It is actually very easy to combine those last two resolutions and do both at the same time! Here are a few easy ways to live a greener life while also saving a bit of extra money.

light bulbs

Save energy to save money:

  • Install LED bulbs when your older incandescent bulbs burn out.
  • Wash clothes in cold water and line dry or choose the 'less dry' option on your dryer.
  • Unplug appliances when you're not using them.
  • Install a programmable thermostat.

Save money by saving water:

  • Take shorter showers to reduce water use.
  • Install a low flow shower head and low flush toilets.
  • Plant drought tolerant plants in the yard.
  • Only run your dishwasher when it is full.

Save on gasoline by driving less:

  • Look into a ride share program or commute to work with a coworker.
  • Consolidate errands to reduce your around town driving.
  • Make sure your car is in tip top shape so it runs efficiently.
  • Consider working from home one day a week.

winter vegetables

Rethink your grocery shopping experience:

  • Skip the bottled water and drink from the tap instead.
  • Choose seasonal fruits and veggies, which are usually cheaper and have a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Cook from scratch instead of buying premade.
  • Buy in bulk to save money and reduce packaging waste.

Think before you buy:

  • Ask yourself if you really need something before buying it.
  • Buy quality items, usually the cheapest items are the first to break.
  • Start shopping at garage sales, thrift stores and consignment sales whenever possible.
  • Keep your credit card at home to limit impulse purchases that you don't really need.

There are a lot of ways to reduce our carbon footprint that are not only inexpensive but that will save us money in the long term!
