I love to travel, but I don’t always enjoy budgeting for it! Vacations can be very expensive, but if you put a little effort into saving money you can plan an amazing vacation for pennies on the dollar. One of the beauties of smartphones is the bevy of apps available, including several must-haves for the bargain traveler.

1. GasBuddy
Whether you are planning a road trip or renting a car at your destination city, GasBuddy helps you find the cheapest gas in the area. GasBuddy uses crowdsourced information to report the best gas prices. GasBuddy also has an incentive program that allows users to earn points and awards for reporting local gas prices.

2. HostelWorld
Hostels are the ultimate in bargain travel accommodations, but how do you find one? The HostelWorld app is one of the most comprehensive hostel apps I’ve ever seen, with booking information available for thousands of hostels around the world. In addition to researching hostels and their amenities, users can book a reservation from within the app itself.

3. Jetsetter
Jetsetter is perfect for travelers that have flexibility with their vacation dates. The app allows users to find and book last minute deals at destinations across the world. The program doesn’t just look at hotel deals, though. Jetsetter also allows users to book entire vacation packages or reserve private vacation homes.

4. TripAdvisor
TripAdvisor is always my go to app when I plan a vacation. From hotel and dining reviews to tips and tricks from insiders, I always find a wealth of information on TripAdvisor. I’ve easily saved hundreds of dollars on vacation travel since discovering this app many years ago, with the savings coming in a variety of ways. For example, I’ve had hotels offer a discount on repeat bookings if I posted a review (honesty is key when it comes to your review!). Another way I’ve saved money is by skipping an expensive dining experience in favor of a very popular hole-in-the wall eatery that I would have never heard about had without TripAdvisor.

If you’re a budget-conscious traveler, what are your must-have apps?
