Grilled Romaine Salad

If you want a change from your everyday salad, trying grilling your romaine leaves with this quick and easy grilled romaine salad recipe. Romaine—one of the few lettuce varieties that is sturdy enough to hold up to grilling—is wonderful with a slight char. Serve this salad with a steak, pork or chicken. And with one more side dish, you have a complete meal! This creative starter or side dish is great for those warm evenings when you want to cook your entire dinner outside on the grill.

Grilled Romaine Salad 

Grilled Romaine Salad

Prep: 15 minutes
Cook: 6 minutes
Yield: 4 servings


3 to 4 hearts—the sweet center leaves—of romaine lettuce, halved
1/4 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 large tomato, chopped
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil
1 cup bread cubes, toasted (optional)
1/3 cup shredded Parmesan cheese


Preheat grill to medium-high heat.

Whisk together olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper in a small bowl and brush on romaine leaves.

In a single layer, place the leaves on a preheated grill. Cook 2 to 3 minutes per side or until tender and lightly browned.

Top with chopped fresh basil, tomatoes, Parmesan and bread, if desired. Drizzle with remaining dressing.
