Upcycled Magnetic Pencil Holder

Doesn't it seem like you can never find a pencil or pen when you need it most? The phone rings and you need to write down a phone number, or you need to jot something down on your grocery list and all you can find in your desk drawer is a broken crayon. Keeping track of pens and pencils can be challenging. And by upcycling, which is using old or discarded materials to make something new, you can feel good about cutting down on the amount of waste your family produces. This upcycled magnetic pencil holder can be placed on your refrigerator or magnetic board so that you never again have to try to memorize a phone number or forget to buy bananas!

Upcycled Magnetic Pencil Holder

Supplies:

One upcycled container. My favorite options include a metal bandage container, small tin can or a largish plastic spice container.
Scrapbook paper of your choice
Decorative tape, like Washi tape, to use as trim for the edges, if desired
Decoupage medium (a substance that acts as a glue, sealer and finish for attaching paper and other materials to surfaces)
Brush
Small magnets
Hot glue gun

Directions:

Cut out a piece of scrapbook paper large enough to wrap your container all the way around. A tip is to trace the height of your container onto the paper with a pencil to make sure you get a good fit.

Apply a thin layer of your decoupage medium to the back of the paper and affix it to your container. Press gently and let dry a few hours.

Trim the edges with matching decorative tape, if desired.

Using the hot glue gun, attach small magnets to the back of the container. Try to apply the magnets where the seam of the paper is so that it is hidden behind your pencil holder.

Once the glue dries, stick the container on the refrigerator and add a few pens and pencils!
