Three Family Activities to Kick Off Summer

Jun 03, 2016

As a kid, the day that school gets out for summer is a pretty exciting one. The possibilities of what you’ll do with all of your free time starts swirling through your mind and you just cannot wait for the fun to start!

As a parent, sometimes you feel an overwhelming sense of pressure to come up with fun ways to pass the time and keep your kids entertained. It can be challenging, especially if you’re looking for budget-friendly activities to do together. To help you plan a few fun and creative things to do, I’m sharing three of my favorite ways to enjoy the summer.

Dad and child gardening

Plant a Garden

Gardening is one of our family’s favorite weekend (or summer evening) things to do together. Everyone gets involved – from choosing what vegetables to plant, to picking the weeds, to making sure we’re watering the plants regularly. We’ve been gardening in our backyard for years and it’s always a great way to spend time together. Plus, you get to enjoy your harvest and get the kids involved in preparing healthy meals. Any age child can help garden, which makes it a great way to spend some quality time together as a family.

Explore Local Hiking Trails

Any time spent exploring the outdoors is time well spent. Exploring local hiking trails can be a fun way to get the family outside and enjoy some fresh air. Make a map of the new trails or paths you take over the summer. Even mapping out new routes for evening walks can turn it into more of an adventure and can get the kids excited. Whether you have older children, bring along the family dog, or push a little one in a stroller, you can easily find new places to explore together.

Backyard Bird Watching

We have a tree in our backyard that has a couple bird feeders hanging in it. To our surprise, birds come every morning and evening to get some food. We have found that as a family we really enjoy watching the different types of birds visit our yard! You can get the kids involved by making homemade bird feeders, helping to refill the bird seed and even drawing the different types of birds they spot in the yard. This is a great activity for them when they start to say “there’s nothing to do, I’m bored.”

Do you plan to try one of these summer activities? What other ways do you keep kids busy while on break?
