Even during the hot summer months, I love having blankets around my home. I enjoy using them for snuggling up with my kids, to style a bedroom, for picnic gatherings and even for family beach trips.

Do you have throw blankets that need a little makeover? Tassels are the perfect detail to add to blankets and even pillows. Once you make one tassel, you can't stop making them. You can make tassels out of almost anything that is string like, such as strips of leather, an old t-shirt, ribbon, yarn, cord, baker's twine and even paper strips.

To make your own tassel blanket you will need the following. For my blanket I made 16 tassels, but depending on the size of your blanket you may need more or less.

Materials and Tools:

Throw Blanket
Yarn in various colors (1 skein of each color of your choice)
5 to 6 inch width piece of cardboard
Scissors
Sewing machine

Instructions:

Wrap the yarn around the cardboard about 60 times.

Remove from cardboard. If your blanket has fringe, use the fringe strings to tie around the middle of the yarn. Hide the knot of the fringe in the middle of the tassel. Grab a piece of yarn and tie about an inch from the top of the tassel. Trim the bottom to make even.

Once you’ve attached all of the tassels, sew the edge of the blanket in the zigzag threading option (to prevent fraying) and trim the remaining fringe.

Repeat to make the remaining tassels in any color of your choice.

If your blanket doesn’t have fringe, use a piece of the same yarn material and tie around the middle of the tassel and secure by sewing to the blanket.

We've had this gray striped blanket for a while and now that I’ve added these tassels I love it even more!

What colors will you use for your blanket tassels?
