Five Fun Flavored-Water Recipes to Hydrate Your Summer

Staying hydrated during the summer doesn’t have to be boring. With a little creativity, you can bust out of the boring plain bottled water trend and create your own fun, flavored-water recipes. Before I share a few of our family’s favorite homemade water flavors, I wanted to touch on the importance of staying hydrated.

There are lots of benefits to drinking water: it makes your skin look better, it prevents muscle fatigue, it can help you regulate your weight, and it also keeps your kidneys and other organs in good working order and of course prevent dehydration.

Dehydration symptoms can range from annoying to deadly. Early stages of dehydration can lead to a dry mouth and dry skin, but as dehydration becomes more serious, other symptoms can appear including headaches, low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, fever and even unconsciousness.  

But how much water should someone drink in a day? Although there are no specific minimum requirements, the National Academy of Sciences has set a recommendation of 91 total ounces of water for women daily and 125 ounces for men. This includes all sources of water, not just beverages. Now, let’s help you meet these recommendations with five, fun flavored-water recipes!

For each of these flavor combinations, fill a one-gallon glass jar three-fourths full with water; add the vegetables, fruit and herbs listed, then top off with ice. Place the tea jar into the refrigerator for at least four hours and serve well chilled.

  1. Cucumber, strawberry and basil
    Slice one whole cucumber into ¼ inch thick slices and cut the stems off of a quart of strawberries. Place the cucumber slices, strawberries and two whole basil leaves into the water pitcher.
  2. Raspberry, blueberry and basil
    Combine one pint of blueberries, one pint of raspberries and two whole basil leaves into a one-gallon tea jar.
  3. Watermelon and cilantro
    Chop up two cups of fresh watermelon, muddle a small handful of fresh cilantro and add both to the water pitcher. Add more cilantro to taste. My daughter loves cilantro so I usually add a little extra to her glass.
  4. Lemon and lavender
    Slice two fresh lemons and add one teaspoon of food grade lavender. Make sure you are buying food grade lavender – which is for cooking and eating.
  5. Orange, lime and mint
    Slice two navel oranges and one lime. Place the sliced fruit in the tea pitcher; add a handful of fresh mint leaves and chill. Serve with a fresh fruit garnish.
