Five Activities to Celebrate the Autumnal Equinox

September 22 is the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and official start of fall. Depending on where you live though, it certainly may not feel like fall! No matter the temperature, you can still celebrate the autumnal equinox with one of these five fun fall activities.

1. Road trip to see the fall foliage

My absolute favorite way to ring in my favorite season is by taking a road trip to see the fall foliage. In fall 2012, I was lucky enough to visit Grand Teton National Park where I captured the above photo of the beautiful leaves with the majestic Grand Teton in the background.

Your fall foliage road trips don’t have to be as epic as this one was, though. Instead, do some research on local state or national parks.

2. Visit an apple orchard and bust out the apple recipes

While many people celebrate the arrival of fall by buying pumpkins, I prefer to celebrate the season by making my favorite apple recipes. If you have an apple orchard nearby, visit for a morning of apple picking with your family and then spend the afternoon baking. Here are a few recipes to try by my fellow bloggers:

3. Fall arts & crafts

My kids have grown out of the arts and crafts stage, so I no longer keep supplies of construction paper, glue and pipe cleaners at my house. If you still have youngsters, celebrate the autumnal equinox with a fun fall arts and crafts project. Some great ones are below.

4. Start thinking about home winterization projects

Winter is three months away, but now is the time to start thinking about winterizing your home to promote energy efficiency and save money as the temperature drops. Your local utility company may offer a winter energy efficiency checkup, or you can take the do-it-yourself route and follow the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s winterization tips.

5. Create a vision board for the fall

Vision boards can be a fun way for your entire family to celebrate the changing of seasons and set goals for your family to achieve during the fall. Set aside a weekend afternoon to go through everyone’s individual goals, as well as group goals. Find visual representations of these goals and mount the images on a poster board. Decorate the poster board with fall colors and mount it in your family room.

How do you celebrate the autumnal equinox and the start of fall?
