If you’re planning a Halloween dinner for family or friends, these updated Sloppy Joes are a great idea. Call them spooky sloppy Joes, new and improved, or really whatever you want and no one will know (or believe) that they’re made with ground turkey. This quick and easy recipe (just over thirty minutes from start to finish!) is perfect to prepare ahead of time. Simply warm on the stove before a night of trick-or-treating or other activities. To save time, purchase already-diced onion and bell peppers. Serve on buns, over a bed of lettuce or even over tortilla chips for a game day treat. And, doubling the recipe makes for wonderful leftovers. Stash any leftovers in a Ziploc® Brand Container and refrigerate for up to three days. Updated Sloppy Joes
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 30 minutes
Yield: 4 servings
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1 cup each diced red and green bell pepper
- ½ cup chopped onion
- 1 tablespoon low-salt Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon grill seasoning or freshly ground black pepper
- ½ cup tomato sauce
- 2 teaspoons light brown sugar
- ½ cup barbecue sauce
- 4 rolls, split and toasted
In a large sauté pan, brown ground turkey over medium-high heat for 5 to 7 minutes or until no longer pink. Add garlic, bell pepper and onion; sauté 5 minutes or until tender. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and seasoning. Cook for 2 more minutes.
In a small bowl whisk together tomato sauce and brown sugar. Add the barbecue sauce, stirring well. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve over toasted buns or on a bed of lettuce.
