Recognition for Green Power Use and Onsite Generation

In 2016, SC Johnson received a Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This award recognizes the United States’ leading green power users for commitment and contribution to helping advance the development of the nation’s voluntary green power market.

SC Johnson was one of only seven organizations nationwide to receive an Excellence in Green Power Use Award. The award recognizes EPA Green Power Partners who distinguish themselves by demonstrating leadership in procuring green power from a utility green power product, a power purchase agreement, or a renewable energy certificate (REC) product. SC Johnson is generating 23 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity from on-site landfill gas and wind energy systems.  The company also purchases an additional 55 million kWh of green power annually, which is enough to meet 44 percent of the organization’s electricity use.

SC Johnson ranks as No. 78 on EPA’s National Top 100 list and No. 16 on the Top 30 On-site list. Each list highlights EPA Green Power Partners using the most renewable energy annually as of October 24, 2016. EPA updates its Top Partner Rankings quarterly at www.epa.gov/greenpower/green-power-partnership-top-partner-rankings.

According to the EPA, green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro. SC Johnson’s holistic approach to sustainability includes reducing resource use through renewable energy and using innovative sources of green power, such as cogeneration and wind power.

SmartWay Transport Partnership

Getting there green is half the fun. That’s why in 2007, SC Johnson joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership, a voluntary, collaborative partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

SmartWaySmartWay® strives to reduce greenhouse gases and other air pollutants and improve fuel efficiency. SmartWay® partners – including freight carriers as well as shippers such as SC Johnson – commit to improve the environmental performance of their freight delivery operations. In return, we get access to tools and strategies from the EPA to improve fuel-efficiency and reduce the environmental footprint of our freight operations, such as intermodal shipping, warehouse improvements and less idling.

In 2009, SC Johnson worked to implement legislation in Wisconsin that provides a special permit for heavier truckloads. With the permit, we can safely increase the weight of shipments to our local warehouses to 98,000 pounds from the normal 80,000-pound loads. The heavier loads result in 72,000 fewer shipping miles traveled yearly and 15.7 tons of carbon dioxide eliminated. In addition, 100 percent of 2009 outbound SC Johnson shipments were handled by carriers participating in the SmartWay® Transport Partnership, up from 78% in 2008.

SC Johnson has been honored with a SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. EPA in 2012, 2013 and 2014. We were one of 11 companies to receive this distinction in the shipper and logistics category in 2014. The SmartWay® Excellence Awards program recognizes approximately the top one percent of the EPA's more than 3,000 freight supply chain partners (representing an estimated 788,546 trucks).

Climate Leaders

In 2002, SC Johnson became the first consumer packaged goods company to join the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders initiative, the largest greenhouse gas goal-setting program in the U.S.

Climate LeadersClimate Leader companies commit to reduce their environmental impact by analyzing their greenhouse gas emissions, setting aggressive reduction goals and reporting progress to the EPA annually.

As a charter member, we pledged to reduce our U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 8% from 2000 to 2005. However, by the end of 2005 we had reduced our U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 17%, which doubled the 8% absolute reduction target. We were one of only five participants to reach our Climate Leaders goal.

Our 2011 objective was to cut our U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by another 8% versus the 2005 baseline. We achieved a 27% absolute reduction, greatly exceeding our goal.

While the Climate Leaders program has now been discontinued by the EPA, SC Johnson's work to cut our greenhouse gas emissions continues.

In 2012, SC Johnson received a Climate Leadership Award for Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management (Goal Achievement) at the inaugural Climate Leadership Awards from the EPA, the Association of Climate Change Officers, the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions and The Climate Registry. The company was also honored in 2012 with a Clean Air Excellence Award from the EPA.

In 2013, SC Johnson received a Climate Leadership Award for Aggressive Goal Setting from the EPA, the Association of Climate Change Officers, the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions and The Climate Registry.
