Five Ways to Green Up Your Big Game Party

Feb 02, 2016
Melissa Hincha-Ownby

The big game is nearly upon us, which means fans across the country are planning parties for this year’s championship football game. If you’re throwing a party this year, I challenge you to do so with the environment in mind. I know some of you reading this are rolling your eyes right now, but it is really easy to green up your big game party without sacrificing any of the action!

1. Send electronic invitations
Instead of sending out printed invitations, send an electronic invitation to cut down on paper waste. There are several popular online sites that allow you to create custom invitations, or you can create your own if you’re crafty and have a graphic design program.

2. Skip the disposable plates and cups
Plastic cups are standard at most parties, but this year pledge to go without disposable plates and cups. Even if you have to spend a little money to purchase more flatware, in just a few years you’ll break even. As a bonus, you won’t be adding to your local landfills.

3. Use linen napkins instead of paper
Use linen napkins…what? Yes, I’m suggesting that you skip the paper napkins and use your cloth napkins instead. Like the reusable cups and plates, you’ll quickly recoup the upfront costs, and you can use them throughout the year.

4. Buy in-season and/or locally grown produce for snacks
One of the best parts of a football party is the food. When planning the snack menu this year, spend a little extra time researching in-season fruits and vegetables and then try to find locally grown products. Support your local farmers!

5. Go organic
From produce to meat to beverages, substitute the ingredients in your usual game day treats for organics. They can be better for the environment than the traditional alternatives.
