Upcycled Craft Idea: DIY Mason Jar Bank

Diane Hoffmaster

If you have ever wandered through the thrift store or a garage sale, you may have come across a few mason jars. I have found a number of ways to reuse (or “upcycle”) these versatile jars around the house. This upcycled Mason jar bank is a creative way to encourage your family to start saving spare change. You can add paint, ribbon or even glue pictures that you print off the computer. Leave it somewhere convenient and start saving your nickels, dimes and pennies. By the end of the year, you will have saved up a nice amount of money without working too hard!

Mason Jar Bank

Supplies

1 large Mason jar
Spray paint
4-inch square piece of cardboard
Pencil
Scissors
Box cutter or razor blade
Ribbon (2 to 3” wide, 8” long)
Hot glue gun

Directions

Remove the lid and spray paint the Mason jar, use two to three coats, depending on how it looks and your own personal preference.

Trace the inner section of the Mason jar lid onto the cardboard with the pencil. Cut out the circle from the cardboard.

Using the box cutter, cut out a long, thin section in the center of the cardboard circle to form the slot that the money is put through. Tuck the cardboard circle into the outer ring of the Mason jar lid.

Once the paint is dry on the jar, fit the lid onto the top of it. Using hot glue, secure the ribbon around the center of the jar and let dry until cool.

Set your new Mason jar bank on the counter and start adding your loose change!
