Dedicated recyclers don’t skip out on their environmental duties just because they are traveling in a foreign country. We all share the same Earth, so recycling efforts while in Mexico, France or Thailand are just as important as what you do to recycle at home. Here are some tips to help you reduce your footprint when you are abroad.

Plan ahead
Before you embark on your adventure, do some research on recycling in your destination country. Look for information on public recycling centers and government sponsored recycling initiatives. There’s no substitution for research, and the more you can do ahead of time the less you will have to worry while on vacation!

Check with your hotel
The easiest place to recycle while vacationing in a foreign country is at your hotel or vacation rental. Most major hotel chains have recycling programs, many with in-room recycling containers. If you don’t see an obvious recycling location on site, ask the concierge or front desk for information.

Big box stores
Most U.S.-based mass merchandise stores often have recycling centers for customer use. Depending on your vacation location, check with the local branch of popular stores for recycling options.

Bring it home with you
As a last result, you can practice the camping adage of ‘pack it in, pack it out.’ In other words, bring your recycling items home with you. This is obviously not an option for food-based recycling items, but you can pack recyclable paper and water bottles in your suitcase for recycling at home. Again, this would be a last resort, but it is a solution for die-hard recyclers.

Create less waste
The simplest option is to create less waste! Check out these tips on reducing waste while on vacation so you don’t have to worry about finding a recycling bin while you should be enjoying your big trip!

Do you keep your recycling commitment while vacationing, even in a foreign country?
