15 Earth Day Activities For Kids

Earth Day is a fun day to celebrate with kids. Sure, it comes with a very serious side, but it is largely about learning to love and appreciate our earth. We naturally are more likely to protect and conserve things we love and value, so this is a great excuse to inspire kids with the knowledge that their actions make a difference.

The following ideas of Earth Day activities are focused around three areas. I recommend doing an activity from each area, but certainly don't feel like you need to do them all. You can also spread these activities out during the week before Earth Day to help build excitement for your kids.

Inspire a Love for the Earth

The Earth is so full of beautiful sights and wonderful resources. Help your kids to appreciate Mother Nature and all that we are given.

1. Have a picnic outside in a beautiful location.

2. Take a hike.

3. Go canoeing.

4. Get a bird identification guide and go bird watching.

5. Start a tree journal.

6. Take a nature scavenger hunt.

7. Read nature oriented books together. (Depending on your child's age, I recommend books like Dr. Seuss’ classic The Lorax, books with beautiful nature illustrations or nature fact books).

Preserve at Home

Have your child help you come up with new ways to preserve our resources at home.

8. Create a recycling bin and start filling it.

9. Talk about ways to conserve water.

10. Talk about ways to conserve energy.

11. Start or work in a home garden.

Make a Difference at the Community Level

There are also many ways kids can care for the Earth and help make a difference at the community level.

11. Volunteer with your local park service.

12. Support a local farmer's market or sign up for a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program.

13. Volunteer with a local gardening club.

14. Help start a green school project.

15. Start or help with a fundraiser for an eco-friendly project that you care about, such as cleaning up a local river or lake.

I hope you enjoy some of these fun Earth Day projects with your kids. It is a great time for family bonding and inspiration all at the same time!
