DIY Wizard Wands

a masterpiece wand with vine and flowers

This DIY wizard wand activity is a fun nature craft to do with the kids. I was given the idea last summer after a trip to an amusement park where my kids drooled over the (very expensive!) wizard wands. I didn't shell out for premade wands, and I was glad I didn't because I soon found my children playing with their own homemade wands. Completely on their own, they had taken sticks and wrapped shiny pipe cleaners around them to make a wand that was completely their own. I loved their creativity, so yesterday when we took a trip to our local park I challenged them to be on the lookout for a cool stick to use for a DIY wizard wand contest.

I told them we would each pick a stick and decorate it using any materials we wanted, and then their dad would judge the winner. The contest part is optional, but it does add an extra fun element.

We each picked sticks that had already fallen along the hiking trail. My 11 year old daughter choose one that was less of a wand and more of a wizard staff! When we got home I told them to raid our crafts closet and find anything they could to decorate with. My daughter went her own way and came up with a masterpiece.

That is one of the fun parts about crafting with children, you never know how they may surprise you with creativity and talent. My daughter collected flowers from our yard, wild violets, azaleas and white blossoms that fall off our trees. She wound a vine around the stick and tucked the flowers in at regular intervals.

I went into the craft closet looking for acrylic paint and ribbons, but only found fabric paints and yarn so I went with that. To prevent a huge mess, I used an old cardboard box to work on top of.My 8 year old son came right behind me and starting helping himself to my craft supplies. I told him he could get any supplies he wanted, but he wanted mine! In the end, we each crafted our wizard wand using slightly different techniques.

It was really fun and economical to make these wands with supplies we already had around the house. It was more fun to watch the kids play pretend games with their new nature crafts!

Sticks of various shapes and sizes
Acrylic paint
Fabric paint
Paint brush
Glue Gun

NOTE: You do not need all of these supplies. The sticks are the only mandatory element, and the rest should be what you have around the house.

The directions are pretty minimal. You just need to find sticks and go to work decorating them into a wand that reflects your style. You may want to try out several different styles and see which wand chooses you!

Have fun selecting the perfect stick from nature and assembling your DIY wizard wands!
