Sun Safety Tips for Summer

Are you planning for a summer filled with outings to the beach, hikes in the mountains and family bike rides? If so, don’t forget to protect your kids and yourself from the sun. Although sun safety preparation will differ depending on your chosen activity, it is one of the most important parts of your summer adventure planning.

The standard go-to for summer sun protection is sunscreen. Sunscreen comes in a variety of strengths and can be made from several different ingredients, so spend a little time researching the best sunscreen for your situation before heading out for a day in the sun. Note: Don’t forget to put sunscreen on oft-forgotten areas like the tips of your ears, the tops of your feet and even the part in your hair.

Clothing and accessories

Combining sunscreen with proper clothing and accessories is the best way to prevent sunburn if you won’t be in the shade. Visit your local sporting goods store and stock up on UV-rated clothing, which can be worn whether you’re heading to the beach to surf or planning to spend the day hiking in the mountains.

Don’t forget to protect your eyes

Did you know that your eyes can also get sunburned? They can, and speaking from personal experience, it is painful. Wear a pair of UV-blocking sunglasses to prevent sunburned eyes.

Take sun breaks

The best way to avoid sunburn is to avoid the sun. This may not be possible if you have a day at the beach planned, but try to incorporate sun breaks into your day. Head to a nearby restaurant for a lunch break or take the kids to the ice cream shop for a special dessert.

A note about mosquitos

In addition to protecting your family against the sun this summer, you also need to consider mosquito protection. With news of Zika virus spreading across neighboring countries, and West Nile Virus already present in 48 states and the District of Columbia (Source: CDC), incorporating mosquito protection into your summer sun safety routine is important.
