7 Ways To Save Fuel

Jul 07, 2016

Saving fuel is a great way to conserve both the environment and your money. Using less fuel can reduce the environmental stress of fuel discovery and extraction, and lessen the carbon footprint of fuel combustion. So, if everyone makes a few small changes we can collectively make a large contribution to the environment. Here are several ways to save fuel and funds this summer.

1. Carpool

Whenever you can, carpool to work or to pick up the kids from school. We have a four parent carpool for my daughter's school and that means we are reducing the emissions by three cars traveling over 10 miles. That really adds up! Even occasional carpools to events are a great way to save fuel.

2. Don't Idle

Don't let your engine idle while you wait. Instead turn off the engine and roll down the windows.

3. Check Your Tire Pressure

Check your manufacturer's tire pressure guide and keep your tires properly inflated for both safety and improved gas mileage.

4. Don't Speed

Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 50 mph. According to the US Department of energy, "you can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 50 mph is like paying an additional $0.16 per gallon for gas." That’s a lot of money when you think about it!

5. Use Cruise Control

If you use cruise control on the highway, it helps you maintain a more constant speed and in most cases will help improve your gas mileage.

6. Remove Excess Weight

Keep you trunk clear of unnecessary clutter so that you don't use extra gas hauling around items that you don't need with you.

7. Reduce Driving Time Through Planning

If you have to drive into town for something, plan ahead to make sure you can get any other errands done while you are in that part of town. Combining trips will help you save fuel, money and time.

I think it goes without saying that if you can walk or bike instead of driving, that’s the best way to save fuel. Also, when it comes time to get a new vehicle, look for one with better gas mileage. I hope you find these tips to save fuel useful.

Were any of these ways to save fuel new to you?
