How to Plan a Neighborhood Movie Night

Jun 15, 2016

Bringing your neighborhood together for an outdoor movie night can be a ton of fun. Not only does it give all the families something to do together, but it also allows for you to connect with neighbors in a casual setting, which I always enjoy. We host several movie nights on our front lawn each summer and it’s always something the neighbors look forward to. Here are a few tips you can use if you would like to host your own neighborhood movie night.

Get A Projector
A few summers ago, we purchased an outdoor movie projector and have since put it to great use. If you’re not interested in purchasing one yourself, you can do what we did and borrow one from a friend or rent one from a local party rental company.

To offset the cost, you can always ask the neighbors if they’d be willing to pitch in for the rental fee. Keep in mind it will still be a lot cheaper than taking the family out to the movie theatre! Also be sure to have a movie screen. We just attach a large white sheet to our garage door.

Pick A Movie
I let the kids lead the way here (with a little guidance of course). The kids in our neighborhood have a wide variety of ages, so it’s important that we show a movie that will keep all of their interests. We start by coming up with a list of about five movies we think the kids will like (I help to make sure the movies are age-appropriate and ones we can rent or already own).

Once I’ve helped them make a list, I turn it over to the kids for a vote! This is by far their favorite part. You can let the kids take around “ballots” and ask for votes, or put up a big poster or chalkboard in your front yard and invite the neighbors to come over and cast their vote.

Make A Plan
Once you have the movie selected, you’ll need to make a plan and let your neighbors know about your movie night. We typically make a flyer on the computer together letting them know what day and time we’ll be showing the movie (make sure the sun has set so you will be able to see your movie outdoors). We also include a “what to bring” section. Chairs and blankets are a must! You can also ask for families to contribute popcorn, candy and drinks to share or just let them know to bring their own.

What do you think? Do you think your neighborhood would enjoy an outdoor movie night?
