I've heard that SC Johnson is working in "Base of the Pyramid" communities. What does that mean?

There are four billion people at the lowest economic level around the world, known as the “base of the pyramid”. They have never experienced things most of us take for granted today, like modern kitchen appliances or indoor plumbing. These consumers have a per capita income of less than $3,000 per year. We believe there is an important opportunity at the base of the pyramid, to bring sustainable livelihoods to the community while at the same time bringing sustainable new business to our company.
