SC Johnson Commitment Giving Back

Contributing to Our Communities

At SC Johnson, we're committed to giving back to the communities where we live and work.

We believe in investing in more than just our products. We're committed to the communities where we live and work. That’s why in 1979, after more than 40 years of informal giving, we formalized our commitment to donate annually to charitable causes. Three decades later, we proudly continue that practice.

Five percent of pre-tax profits goes to corporate giving – nearly four times the corporate average. At the subsidiary level, companies aim to contribute up to 2% of pre-tax profits.

Leadership in Every Community

In the 70 countries where SC Johnson has operations around the world, we aim for each SC Johnson company to:

•   Demonstrate senior management leadership in the community through the General Manager holding at least one board-level membership with a major local community nonprofit organization.

•   Promote and coordinate at least one significant employee volunteer effort in the community each year. Give to local charities at a target of up to 2% of pre-tax profits. volunteers

The result is stronger communities. In recent years, our companies have supported youth environmental protection programs in China, housing for young girls at risk in Mexico, reforestation in an area of Germany ravaged by storms and heat, primary education for disadvantaged young girls in India, and more.

The SC Johnson Fund, Inc.

Our charitable arm, the SC Johnson Fund, Inc. was established in 1959 to provide grants supporting a wide array of needs. It has provided millions of dollars to organizations working to improve quality of life in the communities where we operate.

Recent major contributions have included:

•   Underwriting a Milwaukee Art Museum Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit and educational programming for students, for $100,000

•   Supporting the Great Lakes Wind Siting Project, a Sierra Club Foundation initiative to explore developing wind energy in the Great Lakes area, for $125,000

•   Establishing an endowed scholarship for economically disadvantaged students at Gateway Technical College in Racine, Wisconsin, for $100,000Community leadership and volunteerism are important

The Generosity of Our People

We take pride in the generosity of our employees. While the company gives back to its communities, our employees give of their time and money, too.

For example, our 2010 United Way campaign in the United States delivered great support despite the poor economy. SC Johnson employees and retirees contributed $883,000, more than 3 percent over the previous year’s total. With the SC Johnson Fund, Inc. dollar-for-dollar match, this meant more than $1.7 million to United Way-supported agencies.

Additionally, following the powerful earthquake and destructive tsunami in Japan in early 2011, SC Johnson employees around the globe asked what they could do to help colleagues affected by the destruction. The SC Johnson Japan Disaster Assistance Fund was quickly established and ultimately raised more than $600,000 to help the people of SC Johnson Japan who needed major home repairs. The funds from their colleagues around the world are being used to help them rebuild and recover.
