Organizing Your Car | Family Economics

By Sarah Kimmel

When you are a mom sometimes you can feel like you live in your car. Sometimes it also looks like you live in your car! Soccer clothes, food wrappers, diapers, even food can make your car look like a disaster very quickly. Once, while sitting in my sister’s car I reached in the arm rest to find an apple core! Keep your cars looking nice all the time with a few rules to drive by.

Rule 1: Always throw trash away, right away. If you have a bag specifically for trash in the car it will cut down on the stray trash. Some people have found it helpful to have a small bag in each row in the car so that a trash bag is never far away. Emptying these bags or replacing them regularly is essential for keeping the car looking nice.

Rule 2: Use a large storage bin. This bin is to store the soccer/football/volleyball/etc equipment. You won’t have to constantly be wondering where this shoe is or where that knee pad is. If it is stowed away neatly in the trunk or back it won’t take over the rest of the car.

Rule 3: Use a small storage bin. This is to carry snacks, drinks, extra wipes, and all the other things you need while on the go.

Rule 4: Empty regularly. Each time you arrive home, make sure you take an extra minute and bring everything that doesn’t have a specific home in the car back into the house. Doing this will prevent things from piling up in the car that don’t belong there like toys and jackets.

If you are constantly taking extra minutes here and there to make sure the car is in perfect condition it will never become an overwhelming task to clean out your car!
