Thirteen Indoor Activities for Snow Days | Family Economics

By Trisha

The kids are out of school for a snow day and its cold out. The “I’m bored” syndrome is hitting your home. What is a mom to do with a group of bored kids on those long snow days?

Fear no more! Here are 13 fun ideas to cure the “I’m bored” syndrome in no time.

Warning: Do not hand over this list to your bored children or you may be asking for more than you bargained for. I recommend you offer one to three things they can choose from, and then let the fun begin.

Movie day – Who doesn't love a movie day? Rent or watch already-owned movies your entire family can enjoy. Pop that popcorn, get out treats and enjoy a day together.

Video game play-off – Announce a video game day for the family. Even mom and dad get to play video games with the kids. Make up fun competitions and eat picnic style while playing games.

Family reading – Did anyone get a new book that the whole family would enjoy? Hold a nightly family reading time and enjoy a book together.

Art projects – Do you have a kid art project you’ve been waiting to have time to accomplish with your kids? Now is a great time to start!

Pajama day – Announce a “stay in your PJ’s” day. Allow your kids to hang out all day in their pajamas.

Puzzle fun – Begin a family puzzle that you work on during the winter months.

Treats for kids – Get out the cookbooks and look up fun kid recipes or desserts and make or bake a special treat together to enjoy.

Scrapbooking fun – Take a day and begin a 2011 scrapbook of your activities and celebrations.

Game time – Host a family game day or night using games your children seldom play or have possibly never played including fun card games that you can find on the internet.

Cooking fun – Kids love to cook.  Why not let them help you prepare a meal one night or better yet prepare and freeze a few meals for the busy days ahead.

Rock ‘n’ roll fun – Get out a musical video game or your own musical instruments and have fun jamming together with family and friends. Create competitions and give out silly awards for loudest, silliest, and craziest. You could even have a dress-up contest using items in your home to create your costumes.

Kid drama – Kids love to be the star of the show. Have your kids create their own skits or songs during the day to then perform that night after dinner for the entire family. Search the Internet for skits, songs and plays that they can also perform if they are not feeling creative.

Snowman party – Beat the indoor blues by celebrating winter with a snowman party of frosty treats, games, crafts and fun. For more snowman party ideas go to 24/7 MOMS.
