Homemade Family Gifts: Spiced Sugary Pecans | Family Economics

Like most southerners, my family and I are huge fans of pecans. During the holiday season, it’s southern tradition to set small bowls of spiced pecans on kitchen or coffee tables. They’re the type of snack that as soon as you start eating, you cannot stop! Luckily, there is no butter or oil used in my recipe for Spiced-Sugary Pecans, so you can munch away with less guilt! This recipe is not only easy to prepare, but also makes a great gift for friends, neighbors and teachers.

Spiced-Sugary Pecans

Spiced Sugary Pecans 

Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 30 minutes
Yield: 4 cups


1/2 cup white granulated sugar
1/3 cup dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper or smoked paprika
1 egg white
1 tablespoon water
16 ounces pecans, whole (may substitute almonds or walnuts)


Preheat oven to 300°F.

Combine sugars, cinnamon, salt and cayenne pepper or smoked paprika in a small bowl, mixing well.

In a separate bowl, whisk together egg white and water until frothy. Add pecans, tossing to coat and drain. Sprinkle nuts with sugar mixture, mixing well.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place pecans in a single layer. Bake at 300°F for 30 minutes, tossing occasionally. Remove from oven and separate as they cool. Store in a Ziploc® Brand Container with the Smart Snap® Seal to keep fresh.
