Cozy Night in with Homemade Peppermint Hot Chocolate | Family Economics

By Alison Lewis

When it comes to hot chocolate, my daughter, Leigh, can drink it year round. When December arrives my two boys, Alec and Zachary, also love this chocolaty treat. I typically make this Peppermint Hot Chocolate almost weekly during the holiday season. It’s so easy to prepare and it instantly warms the heart and comforts the soul after a long day at school or work. It’s also a lot less expensive than purchasing it at our local coffee shop. This Peppermint Hot Chocolate is made with all natural ingredients and I lightened the recipe by using skim milk, which helps reduce calories and fat. This is an easy and delightful way to enjoy a warm beverage at home with the family.

What is your favorite warm holiday beverage?

Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 10 minutes
Yield: 4 servings

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 quart skim milk
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
4 regular-size peppermint sticks, crushed
1 cup mini marshmallows
4 additional peppermint sticks for garnish (optional)

Crushing Peppermint Sticks: I use a food processor to crush the peppermint sticks. If you don’t own a food processor, simply place the peppermint sticks into a Ziploc® Brand Storage Bag with the Smart Zip® Seal and crush with a meat mallet or large skillet.

Place cocoa in medium saucepan. Gradually whisk in milk until cocoa dissolves. Add chocolate chips and crushed peppermint. Simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally for 8 to 10 minutes until both the chocolate and peppermint have melted.

Bring to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Ladle into mugs and top with mini marshmallows. Serve each with peppermint sticks, if desired.
