The Benefits of Composting at Home

By Trey Burley

Hello, my name is Trey Burley, a husband and father of two little boys living in Atlanta, Ga. I’m happy to have the chance to share my crafty side with you, as well as to chat with you on my thoughts and tips on parenting, home improvement and family activities as an SC Johnson Guest Blogger. Hope you enjoy the view from my perspective!

compost binComposting is the process of taking all the organic and biodegradable waste that you would otherwise throw away and place into a receptacle bin in your back yard, or take it to a commercial composting facility in your area. Through a natural process, the food scraps or yard trimmings break down the organic matter producing a nutrient-rich soil, commonly known as “black gold,” which can be used as a fertilizer to enrich indoor and outdoor plants. When our composter bin was first installed, I imagined myself taking scoops of “black gold” from the bin to our garden of tomato plants. In addition to using the composting as fertilizer, I have discovered a number of benefits from composting throughout the past year.

Less waste: It’s estimated that more than 50 percent of our household garbage is organic and, based on our composting experience, I believe it. From the time my family started composting, we have only had to take the garbage out once a week!

Less smell: It stands to reason that the less organic waste you have in your garbage, the less it will smell. When we’re diligent about composting, we have to remind ourselves to take out the garbage. There isn’t a bad smell and it doesn’t fill up as quickly, which is a win-win for our family.

Increase garden size: Although we’ve had decent results from our garden in the past couple of years, we’ve decided to expand our garden in hopes of improving our output. This year we plan to use some of our “black gold” as a fertilizer for our plants. Using the composted material will help the soil retain moisture and add beneficial nutrients.

Another thing I enjoy about composting is opening the unit in the heat of summer. The top of your compost bin is moving; the ground is literally crawling with worms which help to break down the organic waste from inside. It’s a natural science experiment that the kids will want to take part in.

What benefits have you experienced from composting?
