DIY Centerpiece Ideas

By Scarlet Paolicchi

finding items in natureIt’s that time of year again, time for family and friend get-togethers and holiday parties. This year, I’ve come up with a list of a few items that can help you create a beautiful DIY centerpiece this season. These items are eco-friendly and can be found right in the parameters of your own home helping to bring the beauty of the outdoors into your home.

Flowers and foliage: Flowers are always a beautiful addition to your table, helping to add some instant cheer throughout the room. In season plants include winter jasmines, Christmas roses, camellias and sumacs. Fall foliage with interesting leaf shapes and colors are also available and create a beautiful setting as well.

Acorns: Acorns are great to use because they last a long time without molding or rotting. Try mixing acorns into a large clear vase with other items such as rocks and colored stones and consider painting the acorns to add a little pop of color. You can also use the acorns to encircle your Glade® candles, really bringing out the winter décor.

Pine cones: Have your children help you create a beautiful pine cone centerpiece. Simply collect a number of pine cones from your backyard and paint them using a variety of different colors. These will look great in a volcano vase, or hung around your doorknobs at home. For a different look, spray paint the cones with silver and gold paint.

Fruits and vegetables: Using fruits and vegetables as centerpieces serves two purposes as they can be used as décor one day and served in a meal the next. Create a fruit bowl using a variety of different fruits including apples, tangerines, lemons, pears, artichokes, cranberries, squash, gourds and mini pumpkins. Make it into a family affair and go apple picking with your loved ones for an assortment of delicious treats.

Fresh herbs: If you grow fresh herbs in a container garden indoors, consider using these herbs as a centerpiece during your next dinner party! These are perfect as they can also be used to spice up your menu for the evening ahead.

Berries: Now is the time to bring some springs indoors by using holly bushes with berries, chokecherries, or chinaberries as your holiday décor. Incorporating berries into your table décor helps brighten up the room and lift holiday spirits.

Pine tree trimmings: Trimmings from pine trees are another lovely addition to centerpieces. They are the perfect addition to your table-setting bringing the feel of winter cheer.

What items do you like to use for your centerpieces and/or what are some of your favorite ways to arrange and display them? Thanks for sharing your ideas in the comments section below!
