Back to School Clothing Shopping - Think Green!

We instantly think shopping when back-to-school time rolls around! Whether our children have outgrown or worn out their old clothing, there are always items that must be purchased to get ready for the year ahead.

back-to-schoolIt is a great idea to go through your child's wardrobe from the previous year to see what still fits. Take stock of everything you have so that you will know exactly what you need to purchase. I suggest going through this activity with your child as this is an excellent way of opening their minds to being responsible, planning ahead, and being more eco-conscious.

Reusing what clothing we already have is as green as it gets. However, when this is not possible the next greenest solution is to buy used clothing. This will also save you a lot of money too!  There are great ways to get used clothing: yard sales, thrift stores, online marketplaces like ebay, clothing exchange sites, or simply trading with friends. It feels great to get $150 worth of clothing for $15 -- something I’ve accomplished by scouring through piles of clothes at multiple garage sales!

If you can't find used clothing, then consider buying eco-friendly clothing. According to the Organic Trade Association, organic cotton helps reduce the impact on the environment and is grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. In addition, organic cotton production systems replenish and maintain the soil health and build biological diversity. There are a lot of ways to purchase organic cotton clothing at great prices. Try entering the terms such as “organic cotton clearance” into your online search engine to see what you may find!

Don’t forget to teach your children how important it is to value their clothing. Your children may try harder at making sure their clothes last if they know you’re going to patch up the holes they rip instead of buying them new clothes. That is just one more way being green can save you money!

What are your green back-to-school wardrobe tips and tricks?

I totally agree. It is great to teach kids early about the importance of reusing, and buying used. Not only will it help them be more thrifty but it is so much better for the environment. Buying organic is also very important. At we only sell organic yoga products.
