Saving Energy

Greener choices means more than simply buying energy efficient appliances or recycling the newspaper. Those are great steps! But it's also about recognizing how much we already have, and how to make the most of it.

FAQs

How does SC Johnson do "more with less"?

Many ways! One example is how we've learned to pack our trucks for shipping much more efficiently. In 2006, we began using a system that combines multiple customer orders - and multiple products - to load the fullest, best configured trucks possible. By the end of the first year with the new system, we had cut greenhouse gas emissions by 1,882 tons, used 2,098 fewer trucks and cut fuel use by 168,000 gallons.

How do SC Johnson products do "more with less"?

Each day, SC Johnson products are used by millions of families around the globe, so we think it's important our products not only be innovative, but also effective and responsible. That's led to many great ideas. For example, ultra-light Ziploc® evolve®; bags are made with 25 percent less plastic than regular bags and are manufactured with a combination of renewable wind energy and energy from traditional sources. Another example is that we recently changed our Glade® Plugins® Scented Oil refill packaging to eliminate the plastic-covered windows where the product shows through. Now they have smaller windows with no plastic, making them easier to recycle.

What safety testing do you do on your products?

We put our products through extensive review and analysis to optimize their safety profile and meet consumer needs. First, our safety evaluations take into consideration how products are used in the home. Then we investigate and analyze the most up-to-date safety information on the products and ingredients. Last, we establish safe exposure guideline values to help ensure proper usage.

Among the elements of our evaluation are the following assessments when applicable:

  • Ingredient review
  • Oral, dermal and inhalation toxicity assessment
  • Eye and skin irritation assessment
  • Dermal sensitization assessment
  • Exposure assessment
  • Environmental assessment
  • Regulatory compliance review
  • Industry standards review

Then products must meet or exceed the high health and environmental standards, regulations and laws set by the European Union, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency and the governments of all the countries in which we operate and sell our products.

Are there safety tips I should follow with household products?

First and foremost, always read labels. Carefully review all safety precautions on product labels before opening and using any product. Second, respect different chemicals. Never mix chlorine bleach with any substances that contain acids, alkalis or ammonia. The resulting fumes can harm skin and eyes, and high concentrations can even be deadly. Third, think about storage. Keep toxic and flammable materials safely stored in their original containers and away from hot appliances and open fires. Be sure to properly close containers with child-resistant closures and and always be sure to keep them out of the reach of children.

Aren't natural products better than those made from chemicals?

Not necessarily. "Natural" or home remedies are not necessarily safer, effective or lower in allergens. And sometimes, natural products undergo limited or no scientific testing compared to the extensive toxicological evaluations that companies like SC Johnson require for their product formulations. In contrast, SC Johnson products must meet or surpass all relevant regulatory requirements in the United States, Europe and any country where the product will be sold.

Do natural products contain fewer allergens than products made from synthetic materials?

Not in all cases. Products made from natural materials may have more allergens than products made from synthetic materials. For example, fragrances made from natural fragrance materials contain allergens at fairly high levels, while fragrances made primarily from synthetic materials contain much lower levels. SC Johnson ensures that the allergen levels in all its products can be used safely by consumers.
