Creative Uses for Your Old CDs
With the New Year comes a renewed determination to clean up and organize our lives. Throughout the year, our homes get cluttered with items we no longer need (or want) anymore and finding new uses for these things can sometimes be challenging. One item that there always seems to be an abundance of in my home is old CDs. Whether they are music CDs or old software that is no longer useful, most of us outgrow the content that they contain. While you could certainly donate these old disks to a thrift store or needy family, you could also find creative ways to reuse them around your home. Here are a few ways to repurpose your unwanted CDs:
• Make a DIY craft. Use broken bits of CDs to make a mosaic art craft! Please note: This craft is for adults only and should be done away from children and pets. To safely break CDs into small pieces, boil a pot of water and then place the water in a mixing bowl. Place the CD in the water for about 5 minutes so that it softens. Then use scissors to cut it into small pieces. Use good ventilation for this project.
• Donate them. Take CDs to a charity so they can resell them or to a preschool for their own craft projects. Make sure that they are age-appropriate for the children that you are donating them to.
• Use them as reflectors outside your house, along your driveway and sidewalks. You can also mount them on a short stake and angle them whichever direction you need.
• Turn them into drink coasters. Just cut out some fabric in the shape of the CD and some felt of the same size. Glue the felt to the bottom of the CD. Glue the fabric to the top of the CD. Cover the fabric with one coat of Mod Podge from the craft store. When it dries you have a decorative coaster to set your drink on!
If you are not inspired to repurpose your old CDs, please consider recycling them, rather than throwing them in the trash. CDs contain a number of recyclable materials, including polycarbonate, aluminum, lacquer and gold. Organizations like the CD Recycling Center of America and Back Thru the Future Technology Disposal accept CD donations through the mail. Some electronic retailers also recycle CDs.
