Saving Energy

Did you know the average home pollutes more than the average car? The great news is that even small changes help. By conserving more energy - and using wisely the energy you do need - it's easy to reduce your impact.

FAQs

Can I use green energy?

Many power utilities now offer an option to buy electricity made from renewable energy sources like the sun, wind, water or biofuel. Buying green power from a utility is one of the easiest ways to use renewable energy without having to invest in equipment or take on extra maintenance. Want to do more? Consider generating your own electricity, for example with solar panels on your roof or a mini wind turbine.

What is greenhouse gas?

It’s components in the atmosphere that contribute to the warming of the planet. Many greenhouse gasses, such as carbon dioxide, occur naturally. But these can be increased by human activities. Too much greenhouse gas leads to increased warming of the planet, because at higher concentrations they trap the sun’s heat too close to the earth.

How much green energy does SC Johnson use?

We currently source about 40% of our total global electricity usage worldwide from renewable energy. Find out more here.

What is "green" energy?

While there are lots of definitions, at SC Johnson, "green" energy is environmentally responsible sources of power and energy, typically renewable or non-polluting forms such as wind power, solar power or biomass. Learn more about how SC Johnson is using green energy

How can I reduce my own greenhouse gas emissions?

There are lots of ways to lower your impact. Use less electricity, since most electricity comes from coal and other fossil fuels. Lower your thermostat, since most furnaces and boilers burn heating oil or natural gas, which emit greenhouse gasses. Also, keep in mind that the trash you throw away emits methane, which has global warming potential. So reuse and recycle. Check out the tips on this site for more ideas.

Has SC Johnson reduced its greenhouse gas emissions?

Yes! In fact, for decades we’ve taken steps to minimize our impact, for example using more renewable energy and operating  more efficiently. Since 2000 alone, our worldwide factory greenhouse gas emissions are down nearly 32%, far surpassing our goal of a 12% reduction by the end of 2010. Learn more here.
