What is the Zika virus?
Zika is an emerging disease. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected female mosquito.
There are about 3,500 species of mosquitoes in the world. Only the mosquito species Aedes aegypti is known to transmit the Zika virus. Experts suspect that other species of the Aedes genus of mosquitoes, particularly the Aedes albopictus mosquito, are also capable of transmitting the virus.
