SC Johnson Celebrates Earth Day with River Bend Nature Center Cleanup

Volunteers Support Racine Center and Protect Amazon

SC Johnson volunteers and families cleaned up River Bend Nature Center in Racine in celebration of Earth Day.

160+ volunteers cut brush, laid 6 truckloads of mulch, planted 400 trees and cleared invasive weeds to improve trails.

RACINE, Wis., April 22, 2017 - For volunteers in Racine today, cleanup efforts in their own backyard were combined with a chance to help protect the Amazon rainforest for the entire world.

SC Johnson people and their families celebrated Earth Day by rolling up their sleeves and cleaning up River Bend Nature Center. More than 160 volunteers cut brush, laid six truckloads of new mulch, planted 400 trees and cleared invasive weeds to improve trails. Volunteering for annual Earth Day projects that benefit the community has been a tradition at SC Johnson since 1990.

“We have a long legacy of supporting communities where we operate, especially in our hometown of Racine,” said Pamela Oksiuta, Senior Director-Global Sustainability at SC Johnson. “I’m thrilled that our colleagues and their families chose to spend part of their day giving back to the community —and we had a great time, too.”

In addition to improving the Nature Center grounds, SC Johnson volunteers and the public could view a virtual reality film, Under the Canopy, in the center’s Sam & Gene Johnson Pavilion. The film is a 360-degree virtual reality movie showing the importance of the Amazon rainforest, which was produced by Conservation International (CI) with support from SC Johnson.

As part of its support of the film, SC Johnson launched a matching challenge aiming to protect 10,000 acres of rainforest in the Amazon region. Protecting an acre of tropical forest through CI costs just $25, and the company will match donations acre-for-acre up to 5,000 acres. To donate, go to conservation.org/protect
