The Family Company Provides Over $1M to Leadership Program Over 25 Years

SC Johnson donates $52,000 to fund the summer session of Racine Family YMCA’s Young Leaders Academy.

SC Johnson’s total contributions to Young Leaders Academy are over $1 million since the program’s start in 1992.

RACINE, Wis., May 17, 2017 – SC Johnson, the maker of trusted household brands like Glade®, Raid®, Scrubbing Bubbles® and Ziploc®, today announced its donation of $52,000 to fund the summer session of Racine Family YMCA’s Young Leaders Academy. This latest grant brings SC Johnson’s total contributions to Young Leaders Academy to over $1 million since the program’s start in 1992. This year is the program’s 25th anniversary.

“SC Johnson believes in the power and promise of youth,” said Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President - Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability, SC Johnson. “We’re honored to provide ongoing support to programs like the YMCA’s Young Leaders Academy that help students to stay engaged through the summer months and work to cultivate future leaders and champions for positive change.”

Past participant and present-day manufacturing engineer at a Racine-area manufacturing company, DaZahn Watson speaks from experience about the value provided by the Racine Family YMCA program.

“My involvement with the Young Leaders Academy changed the course of my life,” said Watson. “The Young Leaders program allowed me to overcome obstacles I faced throughout my youth. Because of my participation in the program, I recently graduated from Carthage College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in Physics and Mechanical Engineering, respectively. I am grateful for the guidance provided by the Racine Family YMCA.”

The classes and activities help to create successful leaders among students age seven to 18. Approximately 75 Racine-area youth will participate in an interactive six-week session at Carthage College in Kenosha. Qualified applicants must be incoming students in grades 3 – 8. The program operates Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with weekly field trips and community service projects on Fridays.

“It’s truly a blessing to have many years of support from SC Johnson,” said Ahmad K. Qawi, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the Racine Family YMCA. “This program started as a small nonprofit in 1992 and because of SC Johnson and other Racine business and community leaders, it now is a program under the Racine Family YMCA. Through the years, SC Johnson continued to support us in being a leading change agent in Racine’s communities.”
