RACINE, Wis., June 2, 2017 – SC Johnson, the maker of trusted household products like Glade®, Raid®, Scrubbing Bubbles® and Ziploc®, today announced the donation of $7,500 to Racine-based Helmets to Heal, a nonprofit that provides young athletes with safety education and equipment with the goal of reducing the risk of concussions.

“Football equipment can be expensive, and we want to provide quality, safe helmets so Racine youth have a chance to play,” said Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President - Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability at SC Johnson. “We’re proud to support Helmets to Heal. This donation helps foster a safer environment on the field and good sportsmanship in Racine.”

The company’s donation provided 26 helmets and 250 King-Devick Tests to Racine Youth Sports. The K-D Test is a quick and objective tablet-based assessment which has been validated as an effective sideline concussion-screening test for children as young as five years old.

Helmets to Heal was founded in 2016 by former Racine Horlick High School assistant football coach Kyle Oppenheimer; he now functions as the organization’s executive director.

“After being involved with youth sports for a number of years and seeing participation numbers decrease significantly, I felt like it was time to change the culture,” said Oppenheimer. “It is Helmets to Heal’s goal to provide our youth with better helmets and instill a more active concussion protocol to minimize risk of injury.”

So far, Helmets to Heal has provided 76 Xenith Epic Varsity helmets to football players at four Racine football programs. Along with donating helmets, Helmets to Heal has provided 250 King-Devick Tests, sideline concussion screening, with the goal of determining head trauma and concussion early on.
