Ingredient Disclosure

Our point of view on Galaxolide and Tonalide

SC Johnson is transparent about the ingredients we use in our products. In fact, we go beyond industry standards when it comes to disclosure. We were one of the first companies to make specific ingredient information, including fragrance information, available to our consumers on our ingredient disclosure website www.whatsinsidescjohnson.com.

Consumers have a choice whether or not to buy products that contain fragrance. That is exactly why we introduced our fragrance palette – making a comprehensive list of the fragrance ingredients found in our products accessible to consumers 24/7. All SC Johnson products meet or exceed government regulations, SC Johnson internal requirements and International Fragrance Association (IFRA) standards, and we are committed to continuously evaluating the safety of all of our products, including each product’s individual ingredients.

Specifically related to conversation surrounding fragrance ingredient safety, it is important to note that “polycyclic musks” and “nitro musks” are two commonly discussed synthetic fragrance ingredients. We do not use nitro musks. The polycyclic musks used in our fragrances are present at very low concentrations that are thousands of times lower than levels deemed safe by worldwide regulatory agencies. In fact, their use in our fragrances is at levels much lower than those found in personal care and beauty products.

Despite what has been inaccurately reported, Galaxolide and Tonalide are not classified as hormone disruptors. Safety evaluations have deemed them safe for use in consumer products such as air fresheners, home cleaners and personal care products, by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), and other regulatory bodies in the countries in which our products are sold.

In addition, it is important to note that SC Johnson discontinued the use of phthalates in our North American formulas more than two years ago.

We are disappointed by attempts to perpetuate the spread of unfounded fears and misinformation to the public. Our consumers make thousands of choices each and every day. They do not deserve to be misled, as it only makes it more challenging to make the best choices on behalf of their families. Industry spoke out in February against similar claims and the promotion of false fears. That statement can be found here.

SC Johnson actively promotes the responsible use of our products, particularly around children. We stand by the safety of our products when used as directed and according to the label, and we’re open to dialogue about product ingredients. That’s why we offer whatsinsidescjohnson.com as an ingredient resource and invite questions at that site and through our consumer hotline.
