Throughout this section of SC Johnson's website are many tools and tips. Here are four printable tip sheets to help you make a difference every day.

Don't Waste a Drop — Ways to Save Water

  1. When washing dishes, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.
  2. Wash clothes only when you have a full load — you'll save hundreds of gallons each month.
  3. Ice left in your cup after a meal? Don't toss it down the sink; put it on a plant instead so the water will do some good when it melts.
  4. Turning off the water while you shampoo and condition your hair can save up to 50 gallons a week.
  5. Wash your car on your lawn — that way you'll be watering the grass while you get the car clean.
  6. Set a kitchen timer when watering your lawn or garden, so you don't forget and let the water run too long.
  7. Turning off the water while you brush your teeth can save up to four gallons a minute.
  8. Soak dirty pots and pans rather than letting the water run while you scrape them clean.
  9. Teach children to turn the faucets off tightly after each use.
  10. When doing laundry, always match the water level to the size of the load, and don't use more than you need.

Keep Our Air Clean — Ways to Avoid Air Pollution

  1. Drive less — walk to run errands, telecommute, share a ride to work. If you eliminate one car trip per week, you will stop hundreds of pounds of pollution per year.
  2. When you do drive, drive smart. Accelerating gradually and using cruise control helps keep pollution to a minimum.
  3. If you think you'll be stopped for more than two minutes, turn off your car. Idling for longer than two minutes burns more fuel than restarting.
  4. Look for products that are water-based and have low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — like Windex® glass cleaner from which we removed 1.8 million pounds of VOCs using the Greenlist™ process.
  5. Don't top off at the gas pump — when the pump stops, stay stopped.
  6. Skip the wood stove or fireplace on days with a poor air quality index or high heat.
  7. Avoid using leaf blowers or other equipment that raises a lot of dust.
  8. Think about the air in your home, too — send smokers outside and clean frequently to remove dust and molds.
  9. Don't burn leaves, garden debris or trash in your yard — compost or find a local recycling center.
  10. Buy local products to avoid long-distance transportation, which uses a great deal of fuel.

Shop Wisely — Ways to Save in Stores

  1. Know what materials you can recycle locally and buy items in those types of packaging.
  2. Bundle several errands into one trip to reduce trips in the car and minimize air pollution.
  3. Buying electronics? Plan to use rechargeable batteries. You can save hundreds of dollars a year, plus avoid all those dead batteries going into landfills.
  4. Buy quality tires that will last a long time. They will cost less per mile traveled and reduce the problem of disposing of used tires.
  5. BYOC — bring your own cup. Using a washable commuter mug for your morning coffee will eliminate hundreds of wasted plastic or Styrofoam cups each year.
  6. Don't take paper or plastic. Instead, bring your own cloth bag to the supermarket.
  7. Buy recycled whenever you can. Whether it's computer paper or plastic items, items with recycled content have less impact on the planet.
  8. Buy in bulk to eliminate excess packaging, then repackage into smaller reusable containers like Ziploc® Twist 'n Loc® containers.
  9. When buying food, look for locally produced items. You'll save money, eat fresh foods, reduce transportation costs and strengthen your community.
  10. Check with retailers to see if they offer "green" product suggestions.

Manage Power Use — Ways to Save Energy

  1. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs — they draw less energy and last longer.
  2. Air-dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher's drying cycle.
  3. Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use — even on standby mode they still draw power.
  4. Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120 degrees or lower.
  5. Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.
  6. Recycle aluminum. The energy saved by recycling one aluminum can is enough to run a TV for three hours.
  7. Get a programmable thermostat and set it to turn the heat way down after you leave the house and bring it back up 30 minutes before you arrive home.
  8. Draw the curtains at dusk. A thick pair of curtains can stop a huge amount of heat from escaping through windows.
  9. Keep appliances closed. For each minute the refrigerator is open it can take three energy-intensive minutes to get it cooled back down.
  10. Take advantage of natural power! For example open the shades and use mirrors and light-colored walls to maximize natural light during the day and minimize use of lamps.
