Holiday Dessert: Cinnamon Apple Sugar Dumplings | Family Economics

Alison Lewis

Do you want to create an impressive autumn dessert that only takes 20 minutes to prepare? These cinnamon apple sugar dumplings are so simple and have only five ingredients. The most difficult part of the entire recipe is deciding what type of apples to purchase and then coring them!

Apples are so healthy filled with vitamin C, B complex vitamins, dietary fiber, calcium, potassium and phosphorus. Most of the fiber and antioxidants are in the peel, so leaving it on (as in this recipe) adds an extra health boost. You can make these a few hours ahead of time and then warm up later if you’re in a pinch for time.

Cinnamon Apple Sugar Dumplings

Prep: 20 minutes
Cook: 1 hour

2 tbsp. butter, divided
1/2 cup apple cider
10 tsp. cinnamon sugar, divided
1 (14 oz.) pkg. refrigerated piecrust dough (2 crusts)
4 medium Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples, cored
Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Preheat oven to 350F.

In a small saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add apple cider, 2 teaspoons cinnamon sugar, whisking until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside.

Roll dough on a floured work surface and cut in half. Place apple in center of each crust. Place 1 teaspoon of cinnamon sugar inside each apple. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon cinnamon sugar evenly over each crust. Gently bring the corners to the center of each apple, pressing edges to seal. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Place apples in a lightly greased 11x7-inch baking dish. Brush apple cider mixture evenly over the apples.

Bake 55 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. Serve immediately with vanilla ice cream. Serves 4.

What type of apples are you favorite?
