Tips for Setting a Dessert Table | Family Economics

With the holidays around the corner, there is one item that we can expect to be on everyone’s menu this holiday season – dessert. Whether it’s cookies, a pie, cupcakes or cinnamon rolls, setting up a dedicated table for treats will definitely win you some bonus points from your guests. Here are a few simple tips on how set up your dessert table and make sure everyone satisfies their sweet tooth:

1.    Get inspired: In order to style an impressive dessert table you will need to come up with a plan ahead of time. Get inspired by a pattern, or favorite cookie, and then select a color palette (two colors plus one neutral color) and keep everything tied to those choices. This will give your dessert table a cohesive feel.

2.    Gather your elements: Pick a tablecloth with either one of the two colors you selected, or a neutral (think white or beige). Gather 5-8 trays and/or jars (depending on guest count) that you will use to display your desserts. It helps to think ahead of time which desserts you will have and plan for the trays and jars that way.

3.    Set the stage: Place a 4-6 foot table or piece of furniture against a simple backdrop. You can hang fabric, or prop a large painting ... even hang streamers down the wall. Get creative!

4.    Build your display: Place your linen on the table. Next, place your main piece (typically the largest cake stand or tallest jar) in the center of the table. Arrange other tableware around it making sure that your taller items are in the back and your shorter ones are in the front.

5.    Bring on the desserts: Fill jars and plates with dessert and candies in complimenting colors.

6.    Create favor bags: If you think you will have leftover desserts, place some small favor bags on the table so that guests can take some desserts home with them. Use Ziploc® Brand Sandwich Bags and some colorful ribbon (similar to the color scheme of your table setting) to secure the bag, for a simple and fun favor bag.

Feel free to create this dessert table for occasions outside of the holiday season! Think birthdays, dinner parties and any other upcoming occasions on your list.

What kind of treats will you serve on you dessert table?
