Healthy Weeknight Dinner: Penne with Turkey Marinara | Family Economics

With the holiday season upon us, it can be difficult to stick to your dinner routine. If you’re looking for a quick healthy weeknight dinner, enjoy this lighter pasta entrée made with ground turkey. This simple sauce gets its flavor from carrots, onion, and garlic. You can make it ahead of time and store in Ziploc® Brand Containers (it freezes well too). Use any of your favorite pasta noodles with this sauce; my kids love penne. Enjoy this season or anytime of the year.

Penne with turkey marinara 

Penne with Turkey Marinara

Prep: 15 minutes
Cook: 35 minutes
Yield: 4 servings 


1 (16 ounce) package penne pasta
1 small onion, finely chopped
3/4 cup carrot finely chopped
1/2 cup celery, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 pound ground turkey
2 (28-ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
1/4 cup white wine or vegetable broth
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 fresh basil leaves, chopped
Parmesan, crushed red pepper flakes 


Cook penne pasta according to package directions. Cook onion, carrot, celery and garlic in hot oil over medium-low heat about 5 minutes or until softened. Add turkey, salt and pepper and sauté until turkey is no longer pink. Add the crushed tomatoes and wine, stirring well. Cover and simmer over low heat 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the basil and toss with penne. Top with parmesan and crushed red pepper flakes.
