3 Tips for Entertaining in a Small Space | Family Economics

Tori Tait

Most often, hosting a party in your own home (versus renting a location) is the most practical and affordable option. However, if you’re like me, you might not have a large living space to entertain in. Personally, one of the biggest challenges in hosting a party in my home is lack of space. When I’m planning a party, I start out by thinking how I will break down the space in my home and let that lead me into deciding on other party elements (like decor, food stations and activities).

Planning ahead on the best ways to utilize your space is key to planning a successful event in your home. Here are my top three tips for entertaining in your home.

1.    Don’t be afraid to move things around. Relocate couches, tables, and chairs. The goal is to optimize your space (you can always put it back to normal after your party). Also, take pieces of furniture from one room to the next to accommodate your party needs. Need a dance floor? Put your dining room table on the back patio to make room. Need extra seating? Bring chairs from upstairs, down.

2.    Utilize your space. Whether it’s setting up a bar, food station, or place to do activities− just move stuff around a bit and use the space to have, you can make it work! For a recent baking and craft party, I turned our kitchen island into a cupcake decorating station. After the activity was over, I cleared the mess and used the same space to set out the party food. Simple!

3.    Think outside the box. Turn “dead space” into a functional space. Use your mantel as a place to set arranged flowers or photos of the guest of honor, turn your porch into a decorated entrance to your party, clear a bookshelf and use it as a place to set up a dessert display−just be creative!

What additional tips do you have that will help optimize your space when entertaining guests?
