Our Commitment on Carbon

We’ve reduced our greenhouse gas emissions 71% since 2000, and we’re continuing to implement innovative strategies and practices to further reduce our carbon footprint. Today, 45% of our energy consumption comes from renewable sources.

Extending decades of progress by continuing to reduce carbon emissions.

As we keep working to do our part and help take care of the environment for future generations, a key focus is continuing to reduce carbon emissions across our operations as well as understanding and addressing the environmental impact of SC Johnson’s value chain.

To do this, teams across SC Johnson are working to continue increasing our use of renewable energy and to deliver business operations efficiencies that reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. This includes tackling both Scope 1 and Scope 2 impacts.

A look at our milestones

Here are a few of the key moments in our ongoing journey to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and use more renewable energy.

2003
Cogeneration kicks off

SC Johnson breaks ground on our first cogeneration turbine to produce electricity for the company’s largest global manufacturing facility using methane gas from a nearby public landfill.

2004
Turbine number two

We install our second cogeneration turbine at Waxdale, using clean-burning natural gas to generate electricity. With our first cogeneration turbine, this allows us to generate 85% of Waxdale’s energy needs.

2012
Waxdale wind turbines

SC Johnson powers up two 415-foot-tall wind turbines at our largest global manufacturing facility, enabling the facility to produce an average of 100 percent of our electrical energy onsite.

2017
Expanding wind energy

We reach another milestone in our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with three manufacturing site now running on 100% wind energy: Bay City, Michigan; Mijdrecht, Netherlands; and Gorzow, Poland.

2021
HQ adds geothermal

Our new Waxbird Commons building at our global headquarters is completed, which have helped reduce campus energy consumption by over 30%. New features include geothermal exchange, solar energy, photovoltaic-wind lights, and recycled asphalt pavement.

2023
Expanding solar

SC Johnson reaches another milestone in our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. After installing on-site solar at manufacturing sites in Cairo, Egypt; Nairobi, Kenya and Pilar, Argentina in 2023, a third of our manufacturing sites now generate on-site solar power.

2024
Reaching 100% at Waxdale

We install on-site solar at our largest manufacturing plant, Waxdale, which enables the facility to generate 100% of its electricity from renewable sources

How we’re getting there

We’ve been working to add renewable sources to our energy mix since the early 2000s. For example, since 2020, we’ve expanded solar installations to five SC Johnson sites, increasing our onsite solar generation by approximately 300%. We also continue to use wind power, including onsite wind turbines and purchased wind power from nearby wind farms. Here’s a look at our innovative energy initiatives around the world.

We’re earning recognition for our progress.
