Fact Sheet: SC Johnson Philanthropy and SCJ Giving, Inc.

At SC Johnson, philanthropy and community support are commitments that go back all the way to the beginnings of our story. This commitment was formalized in 1937, when the company began giving 5 percent of all pretax profits to charities each year. In 1959, our charitable fund SC Johnson Giving, Inc. was incorporated to provide further support to the communities where we work and the world at large.

Areas of Focus for Philanthropy

Our primary corporate giving focus is on institutions or organizations that serve or directly affect communities where we have operations. Our giving pillars include creating:

  •  A Healthier World: Help society thrive by addressing vector-borne disease, strengthening healthcare systems with increased access, addressing food insecurity and enabling healthier outcomes.
  • A More Sustainable World: Promote sustainability, with a focus on reducing, reusing and recycling plastic waste and supporting environmental conservation with a focus on healthy oceans and forests and carbon reduction initiatives.
  • A World with More Opportunity: Open doors for those in need by strengthening communities while advancing economic and social mobility through equal access to education and housing.

Some SC Johnson contributions are the result of grant requests, which also include U.S. requests for product contributions. Others are designed to meet needs identified by the company directly.

Recent Examples of Corporate Philanthropy

Donations from SC Johnson and SC Johnson Giving, Inc. have provided millions of dollars to organizations that make the world better for families. A few examples in recent years are:

  • More than $15 million in product and cash donations for Global COVID-19 relief efforts.

  • $5.5 million to Gateway Technical College for the launch of the SC Johnson STEM Scholars Pathway program, providing scholarships to 180 women and people of color, who have historically been underrepresented in STEM industries, and those with limited means the opportunity to gain a four-year degree in a STEM-related career field. 

  • $1.5 million to Save the Children as the presenting sponsor for two summers of the 100 Days of Reading Campaign/Stuff the Bus tour, a 20-city bus tour across America helping families and students engage and learn during the summer months.

  • $2.65 million to Sesame Workshop for Sesame Street activities to educate children, caregivers and communities on health and hygiene practices and the importance of sustainability.

  • $776,000 to Conservation International as part of our Blue Paradox experience London visitor match, providing funds for the protection of more than 22,000 square kilometers of the world’s oceans.

  • $15 million in financial support and products to help at-risk families combat mosquitoes that could carry Zika virus, primarily in the United States, Caribbean and South America.

  • $125,000 in an acre-for-acre match campaign that is helping Conservation International and its partners replant approximately 3 million trees in the Amazon region.

  • $6.5 million to Racine County, our headquarters community, to build a public aquatic center to provide recreation and water safety training for residents.  

  • $150 million from Fisk Johnson and SC Johnson to Cornell University to support the SC Johnson College of Business – the largest gift ever to the school’s Ithaca campus.

  • 11 million pesos to the Dibujando un Mañana foundation in Mexico to help Mexican girls rise above poverty, homelessness and neglect.

  • $5 million to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., to support their American Enterprise exhibition and a state-of-the-art conference center.

  • $3.5 million to Gateway Technical College to support the SC Johnson Integrated Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Center and its STEM programming.
