RACINE, Wis., April 28, 2017 – While creating memories that last a lifetime, the Volunteer Center of Racine County hosts summer camps that teach area youth that volunteering and having fun go hand-in-hand. As part of SC Johnson’s ongoing commitment to the communities in which they operate, the company today announced an additional $25,000 grant to provide funding for the Summer Service-Learning Camp. The donation helps ensure the camp is offered free of charge to its participants.

“SC Johnson believes it is important to instill the principles of volunteerism in the next generation,” said Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President - Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability at SC Johnson. “By taking part in camp activities that include learning about responsible environmental conservation, service to senior citizens and volunteering at a local food pantry, participants in the Summer Service-Learning Camp by the Volunteer Center of Racine County realize they can contribute to the well-being of our community.”

The summer youth camp is held in 12 separate, week-long sessions and offered to Racine area youth, between the ages of 11 and 18 free of charge on a first-come, first-serve basis. Last summer, over 100 youth attended the camps. Camp participants can register for sessions with themes such as career readiness, disaster preparedness and senior care.

“The summer youth camps stress the teaching and learning concepts encompassed through service learning,” said Al Volmut, Executive Director at the Volunteer Center of Racine County. “With the generous support of SC Johnson, the camps are able to engage youth and teach them about the importance of community service. Applications are now being accepted for the upcoming summer season.”

This grant brings total donations to the Volunteer Center of Racine County by the company to over $600,000 since 2001 in support of their youth and senior volunteer programs. The donation was presented at the Volunteer Center of Racine County Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon which takes place each year during National Volunteer Week.
