RACINE, Wis., Aug. 9, 2017 – To increase the number of people who own a home in Racine, Wisconsin, SC Johnson, the maker of trusted household products like Glade®, Raid®, Scrubbing Bubbles® and Ziploc®, today announced the donation of $7,500 to Housing Resources, Inc., a nonprofit that provides education and support to homebuyers. The company’s donation helps support the continued availability of homeownership courses that will assist more than 250 residents in pursuing their homeownership goals.

“Homeownership is good for our economy, and SC Johnson understands the positive impact it can have on local businesses and our community,” said Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President – Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability at SC Johnson. “Homeowners usually buy more than one home in their lifetimes – thus they become vested in their community. With the educational workshops, we hope to foster well-informed potential homebuyers who can contribute to economic growth and job creation in our hometown of Racine.”

In 2016, 251 Racine residents took the HomeWorks for Homebuyers educational courses. These courses, along with one-on-one counseling, helped 66 individuals and families obtain the resources needed to move forward with buying a home. These new homeowners generated $5.8 million in home loans locally.

Housing Resources, Inc.’s educational courses are led by professional mortgage lenders, realtors, home inspectors and insurance representatives. Courses are designed to provide an extensive overview of the home buying process. After finishing the workshops, participants sign up for a one-on-one counseling session or attend credit counseling based on where their needs lie. “We believe homeownership is the foundation for strong neighborhoods and communities,” said MaryBeth Aldrich, Housing Resources, Inc., Racine Program Manager. “Statistics show that primarily owner-occupied neighborhoods have higher home values and lower crime rates, and kids who live in these neighborhoods have better educational and health outcomes. SC Johnson’s support will help our organization provide families with the necessary information to improve their lives through homeownership, improving their community in the process.”

Housing Resources, Inc. is a minority-run agency and was founded in 1991 to provide homebuyer counseling services in Milwaukee. In 2000, the organization extended services to Racine County.

SC Johnson works to make lives better in the communities in which it does business. Since 1937, the company has given 5 percent of all pretax profits to charities – areas of giving include: community and economic development; education; environment and sustainability; social services; health and wellness; and art, culture and the humanities.
