Supporting the Great Lakes Malaria Initiative

Ninety-four percent of malaria cases in 2019 occurred in Africa. SC Johnson is taking action to help.

East Africa is one of the world’s most vibrant regions. It’s known for its natural beauty, wildlife and rich culture. But like so much of Africa, it also faces tremendous public health challenges including the devastating impact of malaria.

That’s why in 2021, SC Johnson joined partners from the East Africa Community to announce a landmark partnership: the Great Lakes Malaria Initiative.

With the Society for Family Health Rwanda, the EAC Secretariat, EAC country governments and other partners, we are working together to improve access to interventions for those at risk from malaria.

The Great Lakes Malaria Initiative targets these areas:

South Sudan
Democratic Republic of the Congo

We will distribute SC Johnson repellent products, including our innovative Mosquito SHIELD™, support entomology research and provide preventative education for 60 million people.

To build on this effort, SC Johnson also partnered with The United Nations Foundation’s “United to Beat Malaria” campaign and the Global Fund in 2022.

SC Johnson and Beat Malaria’s partnership aims to support and highlight the Great Lakes Malaria Initiative by helping fill immediate gaps in malaria prevention, testing, treatment and education for at-risk families in the region.

Partnering with the Global Fund, SC Johnson will be providing technical knowledge to support country led efforts to eliminate malaria. Together, these efforts will aim to reduce malaria cases in the African Great Lakes region by 50% by 2025.

For the past six decades, SC Johnson has been applying our entomological expertise to develop innovative products that provide protection against malaria and other insect-borne diseases. We are thrilled that these partnerships are another step toward a malaria-free generation.
