Stopping Plastic Waste Entering the Ocean

Eight million metric tons of plastic pollute the oceans each year. We're making sure less reaches them.

In January 2022, SC Johnson celebrated a key milestone with long-time partner Plastic Bank. With our help, Plastic Bank has stopped the equivalent of two billion plastic bottles from entering the world's oceans.

Our partnership accounts for more than half this impact – more than 20 million kilograms of plastic, or the equivalent of one billion plastic bottles, stopped from disrupting ocean ecosystems.

Since 2018, we have worked with Plastic Bank to create plastic collection centers across Indonesia, the Philippines and Brazil. Local collectors gather ocean-bound plastic – meaning plastic collected within 30 miles of an ocean or waterway in countries without a formal waste collection infrastructure - and turn it in at the collection points. The plastic is then recycled, creating a circular economy.

More than 25,000 people are registered members of the program, bringing plastic to the SC Johnson collection points in exchange for income. They receive a premium price, paid in digital tokens that are secured from loss or theft, that helps meet needs like groceries, school tuition and health care.

"Plastic pollution and its impact on our oceans is one of the world's most significant challenges. The collection of two billion ocean-bound plastic bottles is a testament to the fact that each of us can be a hero in reducing plastic waste while improving the lives of people who collect it," said David Katz, Founder and CEO of Plastic Bank. "Our Heroes – SC Johnson, the collectors, other partners, branch owners, contributors and employees – are stewarding business, consumption, lives and the planet towards regeneration."

As part of our ocean-bound plastic recycling program, SC Johnson has launched 100% recycled ocean-bound plastic bottles in two of our home cleaning brands: Windex® in North America and Mr Muscle® in the U.K. and Ireland.
